Creating an effective Power BI dashboard requires careful planning and a keen eye for detail.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to dashboard creation, ensuring your dashboards include certain essential elements can significantly enhance their effectiveness and usability.

Let’s explore these key components.

1. Clear and Concise Titles for each Visualisation

I used to slap generic titles on my visuals and move on. Big mistake. When stakeholders are scanning a dashboard, the title is often the only thing they read before deciding if a chart is relevant to them.

What works: specific, descriptive labels. Instead of “Sales Chart,” try “Monthly Sales by Region (YTD).” It takes two extra seconds and saves everyone confusion later.

Keep them visible – sounds obvious, but I’ve seen plenty of dashboards where titles blend into the background or get cut off on smaller screens.

2. Consistent Color Scheme

Watch out for accessibility. Red-green colorblindness is common, make sure your critical distinctions don’t rely solely on those two colors.

Use the same color for the same data point everywhere. If “North Region” is blue on one chart, it should be blue on all of them.

Grid layouts help a lot here. Alignment makes everything feel intentional rather than thrown together.

Bookmarks for guided exploration. These are underused. You can set up specific views and let users jump between them, great for telling a data story.

Slicers for the dimensions people actually filter by. Date range, region, product category, whatever’s relevant. Don’t add slicers for every possible dimension.

Drill-through for detail. Keep summary visuals clean; let users click through to the granular stuff when they need it.
