Mind Over Matter

I recently read an insightful article on “Mind Over Matter” in Book Magazine that really got me thinking about mental health. It’s not just about overcoming a temporary setback or healing from a physical injury, like a broken bone. The journey of mental well-being is ongoing, even when you start feeling better.

One of the key takeaways for me was the importance of unlearning some of those toxic coping mechanisms we develop over time. We all have our go-to methods for dealing with stress or tough situations, but if those methods rely too heavily on others or are unhealthy, they can’t be your long-term solution.

To build a stronger mindset, we must challenge these habits and replace them with healthier alternatives.

So, here’s what we have to do to foster a more positive and resilient mind.

1. Stop Negative Self-Talk

We all have that inner voice that criticizes us, but when we allow these negative thoughts to take over, it can deeply affect our self-esteem. There are enough critics out there, and we shouldn’t be one of them. We should work on challenging those negative thoughts and replace them with positive affirmations. Be your own biggest supporter.

2. Stop People-Pleasing

Constantly trying to make everyone else happy can drain our energy and leave us feeling unappreciated. It often comes at the cost of our own well-being. We need to set boundaries, assert ourselves, and prioritize our own needs. Our happiness should never depend on everyone else’s approval.

3. Stop Bottling Up Emotions

Holding in our feelings leads to stress and anxiety. We have to find healthy ways to express ourselves, whether through journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or seeking professional help. Emotions are meant to be expressed, not suppressed.

4. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

In the age of social media, it’s easy to fall into the comparison trap. But it’s important to remember that people only show their best moments, not their struggles. We must focus on our own path and celebrate our personal growth. Embrace who we are and be content with our unique journey.

5. Stop Holding Grudges

Carrying anger and resentment around is like lugging a heavy weight. Letting go of grudges doesn’t mean excusing someone’s behavior, but it means freeing ourselves from emotional baggage. We should practice forgiveness, not for others, but for our own peace of mind.

6. Stop the Multitasking Madness

Multitasking might seem efficient, but it often leads to overwhelm and decreased productivity. Instead, we must focus on one task at a time and practice mindfulness. We can schedule our tasks to reduce stress and increase our focus.

7. Stop Neglecting Self-Care

You can’t pour from an empty cup. We need to prioritize our well-being by getting enough sleep, eating nourishing food, and exercising regularly. By taking care of ourselves, we’re better prepared to face life’s challenges and care for others.

8. Don’t Fear Failure

Fear of failure can hold us back from taking risks and reaching our full potential. We must view failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. Instead of fearing mistakes, we should embrace them as a part of the process.

Unlearning these habits won’t happen overnight – it takes time and patience. But with consistent effort, we can build a mindset that supports mental resilience and well-being.

So let’s keep pushing forward. The benefits of cultivating these habits are absolutely worth it.
