PMO-CP Certification: What You Need to Know

With a lot of excitement and gratitude, great immense pleasure to inform you that I passed the PMO-CP exam (93%) on 14th July 2024.

I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Americo Pinto for building this invaluable PMO value ring methodology.

How was the Journey

This certification journey not only filled knowledge gaps in understanding the progressive and advanced methodologies for establishing, evaluating, supervising, and enhancing value-driven PMOs but also provided answers to many of the questions that had been weighing on my mind for a long time in order to dispel my own PMO myths.

I thoroughly loved reading the White Papers and used the tool’s case study demo version which helped me to connect the dots.

The Proctor-U Exam experience was excellent, and the procedure was easy to follow as described in the course.

I’m happy to carry a PMO-CP accreditation and am proud to be connected to PMI! 

Navigating the PMO-CP Certification Journey: Insights and Reflections

I started my preparation by reviewing the PMO Value Ring® methodology, which is the foundation of the PMO-CP certification. I then read the PMO-CP certification guide and completed a few practice exams.

Finally, I joined a PMO-CP study group, which was a great way to stay motivated and learn from others.

Here are the recommendations based on my Exam Journey

Mr. Americo Pinto Videos – You should definitely watch the videos by Mr. Americo Pinto at least twice at 1X speed. He explains each step in a very detailed manner and gives a clear rationale behind this methodology.

White Papers – Make sure to thoroughly study the white papers, going line by line. This helped to grasp each individual process step with a deeper comprehension.

PMOVR Tool – Highly recommended to try out the PMOVR tool at least once. The user interface is user-friendly and it makes it easier to understand the Inputs and Outputs of each step. It helped me connect the dots and fill in any knowledge gaps, practically.

Exam Pattern – The questions aren’t overly challenging. They mostly test your understanding of the core fundamentals behind this methodology.

Learning Approach – To effectively learn this methodology, I suggest asking yourself diverse questions. This approach helped me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the concepts needed to pass the Exam.

Core Concept: What’s the main fundamental idea behind this methodology? What are its basic principles?

Objectives: What is the rationale for using this methodology? How does each of the 8 process steps defined will help to solve the specific problem of PMO?

Steps and Workflow: How are the functions and benefits related? What does the workflow or process flow of this methodology look like in each step?

Decision-Making: How are decisions made at each step of the process? What are the recommended best practices when implementing this methodology?

Measurement of Success: How do you measure or evaluate each step? What is the rationale for performing the calculations? What does each metric define?

What I learned

The PMO-CP certification taught me a lot about the different aspects of managing a PMO.

I learned how to develop a PMO strategy, set up PMO processes, and measure PMO performance.

I also learned how to manage stakeholders, communicate effectively, and lead change.

What is the PMO Value Ring methodology?

The PMO Value Ring methodology is a structured approach to setting up new PMOs or assessing and redesigning existing PMOs. It was developed by the PMO Global Alliance in collaboration with experienced PMO leaders from different countries.

The PMO Value Ring methodology is based on the following principles:

• The PMO should be aligned with the organization’s strategic goals.
• The PMO should provide value to all stakeholders.
• The PMO should be continuously improving.
• The PMO should be flexible and adaptable to change.

Content of the PMO Value Ring Methodology

The PMO Value Ring methodology is divided into eight steps:

1. Define PMO functions
2. Balance the mix of PMO functions
3. Establish PMO processes
4. Define PMO KPIs
5. Define PMO headcount and competencies
6. Identify the PMO’s maturity and plan its evolution
7. Calculate PMO ROI
8. Establish a balanced scorecard for the PMO

Each step of the PMO Value Ring methodology provides guidance on how to implement and manage the PMO in a way that maximizes its value to the organization.

The 26 Potential Functions of a PMO and the 30 Potential Benefits of a PMO are worth reading.

I also believe that the PMO-CP certification will make me a better PMO professional. The knowledge and skills I gained from the certification program will help me to develop and implement more effective PMO strategies and processes.
