5 Traits to be successful at PMO

In my decade of experience as a Project Management Officer (PMO), I’ve learned that achieving success in the workplace requires a unique set of qualities.

Whether you’re already a seasoned PMO professional or just starting your career in the field, these traits will undoubtedly propel you to greater heights.

1. Initiatives: Paving Your Path to Success

Successful individuals in the world of PMO are proactive and take initiative within their organizations.

These initiatives go beyond their regular job responsibilities and can encompass activities, projects, volunteering, and more.

To stand out, consider getting involved in community work, supporting high-visibility projects, or even job shadowing.

Going the extra mile is a surefire way to make a mark.

2. Networking: Building Bridges for Career Growth

Networking is a crucial component of PMO success.

I often noticed that High-achievers ensure they know the right people within their organization and, just as importantly, make sure those people know them.

They create a good and sound Perception right in the beginning.

They start by Networking within their own team and gradually extend their reach across different domains and teams within the organization.

Attending meetings, conferences, and training programs is part of their strategy to expand their network and gain visibility.

3. Personal Brand: Let Your Work Speak for You

In the early stages of their careers, successful PMO professionals often adhere to the mantra, “Let your work speak for you.

They work diligently and quietly, allowing their accomplishments to garner attention.

Rather than neglecting certain responsibilities with the excuse, “It’s not my job,” they take the initiative to understand their peers’ work.

By becoming the Go-to person in at least one area (if not more), they establish a strong personal brand within the organization.

4. Upskilling & Quick Learning Ability: Staying Ahead of the Curve

The PMO field is dynamic and ever-evolving. High-achievers continually invest in upskilling themselves and have a keen ability to adapt quickly.

They embrace new technologies and stay at the forefront of industry advancements.

This dedication to learning and growth keeps them competitive and valuable in their roles.

5. Asking the Right Questions: A Path to Recognition

Highly successful PMO professionals understand the power of asking the right questions, especially in leadership meetings or during internal training sessions.

This strategic approach not only provides visibility but also positions them as the go-to individuals for key initiatives and assignments.

By being inquisitive and insightful, they become instrumental in shaping the direction of their organizations.

Bonus Trait: “Walking the Talk” – Honesty and Integrity

In addition to the five key traits mentioned, a bonus trait for PMO success is “Walking the Talk.”

There’s no point in exaggerating your skills only to later fall short in your work. Being honest, reliable, and consistently delivering on your promises is a trait that cannot be overlooked.

To succeed in the long run, do what you say and maintain the integrity of your word.

In conclusion, success in PMO requires a combination of personal drive, strategic networking, a strong personal brand, continuous learning, and the ability to ask the right questions.

These traits, along with unwavering integrity, are the cornerstones of a successful career in project management.

Walking the talk: Do what you say and say what you do.
