To be a successfull PMO Leader

Recently I attended a webinar conducted by PMI, wherein they highlighted the key success factors to be a PMO Leader.

It was a very good session and thought to share the key learnings in this post. It’s easy to adapt when you write something rather than just hear/read. I’m sure this post will help anyone who is aspiring to be a PMO Leader.

1. Listen more than you speak – Hold on to your thoughts as a leader. Get all the questions and answers first. This is the important characteristics of a PMO Leader.

2. Understand the maturity level of the PMO – Budding PMO, Established PMO, Optimised PMO.

3. Understand the challenges and opinions of your stakeholders first. After all, you are setting up a PMO to solve their problems.

4. You don’t need to win every battle. If the stakeholders are not aligned in the thinking, calculate the priorities and accept to solve the most problems.

5. Take things in short strides. Don’t be in the mindset to bring in massive changes within 6 months.

6. Take quick wins. Quick wins can be in terms of the below. Take one thing at a time and get it done within 4-6 weeks after 6 months of probation.

  • Report
  • Simple Process set up
  • Tool implementation
  • Template creation
  • Mini Project/ Initiative

7. Don’t give false hopes and commit to doing miracles. Instead have an open mindset and collaborative approach to bring in the changes along with stakeholders.

8. BE like a hero (your own skills) who works in Packs. Whether it’s Avenger, X-men, Thor, Iron Man, etc. – Be like a hero who works together. You need peers to make your PMO successful.
